Dragon City Chronicles

Role: Production Design, Graphic/Visual Designer, Technical Designer

Overview

The Dragon City Chronicles is a production run from an XR Studio in UCSD'S Design and Innovation building. It takes IP from the Dungeons & Dragons Sourcebook Shotguns & Sorcery to create a live actual play where cast members follow an adventure in the world of Dragon City. I served as an apprentice for production design for this live play where I got to experience the gamification of workforce development as I developed the visual branding for the show and spearheaded the staging of the actual play that takes place in the UCSD Bookstore, as well as virtually on Discord.

Approach

My approach to this is to lean heavily into the IP in the Shotguns & Sorcery Sourcebook as well as the official artbook. From there taking inspiration from 1920s Chicago architecture and the noir aesthetic of the time is where I began mood boarding what the visual language of the Dragon City Chronicles would be. Consulting a Chat GPT Agent well versed in the world also aided in ensuring the branding I was developing made sense in the world of Dragon City.

From consulting the writer of the sourcebook, Matt and Marty Forbeck, to meeting weekly with those in the art and technical pipeline, I was in charge of aligning how Virtual Reality, audience interaction, and holofan technology would fit into this production.

Along the way, what aided in this project was the development of ads made for marque billboards, and LED screens of various sizes. My approach to those was to develop a brand guide and logo which, when approved, got utilized to create posters for our bi-monthly live events.

Moving forward learning shortcut to animation pipelines and envisioning their use with live motion capture to implement in the live plays is a pipeline I am not only learning but leading and documenting as a part of a case study for Sony's XYN pipeline.
