Symbiotic Sentience

Role: Artist, Coder, Exhibition Curator

Overview

Symbiotic Sentience is a multimedia installation piece. Inspired by my commuting lifestyle, spending an ample amount of time on the I-15, she has thought about her connection to her vehicle in a cyborgian sense, as well as, how it is human nature to personify the objects we use. In this way, the interaction that takes place animates the inanimate.

Written works such as "The Cyborg Manifesto" by Donna Haraway and "Cyborgs and Entanglements of Technology, Masculinity, and (automated) Vehicles" by Dag Balmar and Ulf Mellstrom both helped draw ideas incorporated in the LED Matrix Panel display set into the wireframe sculpture. These concepts represent thoughts that a sentient car may have once it becomes aware of its purpose and service as a vehicular extension of a human body that wishes to travel great distances.

The audience is welcome to experience a tunneling environment which highlights the perspective that the automobile becomes one with it's driver.

Approach

This piece being my Major's (ICAM: Interdiscipilinary Computing and the Arts Major) senior course project meant we had 20 weeks to complete a piece of our choosing. The first 10 weeks consisted my me crafting out my idea and working with different mediums to see what was the most feasible for the following 10 weeks.

Using wire ended up being my way to go as I feel the process of essentially making a wireframe of a car from scratch put me in-tune with giving this car "life"; something us humans do every time we put a key in a vehicle and start the ignition. It was a very philosophical process for me which made me want to include a feminist outlook on relationships to our vehicles since the gender study classes I had taken were directly impacting how I wanted to make art.
